These gatherings also provide opportunities for members to share their knowledge, discuss their interests, and connect with fellow astronomy enthusiasts. Guests are always welcome.

Public Astronomy Nights

Twice a month, TAS welcomes the public to Pierce College for popular astronomy presentations. Weather permitting, attendees can also enjoy observing the night sky through a variety of telescopes.

Public Observing at Pacific Lutheran University

From April through November, TAS hosts public observing sessions at the W. M. Keck Observatory at Pacific Lutheran University, giving visitors opportunities to explore the night sky and learn more about astronomy.

Annual Astronomy Fair

Each August, TAS organizes its annual Astronomy Fair, featuring a full day of presentations, workshops, games, and educational activities for the entire family. The event culminates in the Society’s largest star party, where participants can enjoy astronomical observing into the early hours of the following morning.

Community Outreach and Education

TAS is committed to making astronomy accessible to the wider community. Our successful outreach program brings star parties, solar observing, educational presentations, and stomp rocket competitions to schools, libraries, and community organizations throughout the region.

To learn more about our outreach activities or arrange an event, visit our Outreach Page or Contact TAS.

Student Programs and Scholarships

Our student group meets regularly and offers educational classes and games focused on astronomy and physics. Students also participate in field trips and an annual Messier Marathon. In addition, TAS awards scholarships to student members pursuing higher education.

History of the Tacoma Astronomical Society

The Tacoma Astronomical Society traces its origins to the late 1920s and is recognized as one of the oldest astronomical societies in the United States. In 1931, the organization was formally incorporated under the name The Tacoma Astronomical Telescope Makers. During the Great Depression, members supported one another in pursuing their shared passion for astronomy while managing the costs associated with the hobby.

Early Years and Telescope Making

In later years, the organization became known as Tacoma Astronomer. Among its active members was Norm Pettinger, who served as the chief custodian of Tacoma Public Schools. Pettinger continued the tradition of building telescopes and cameras and became one of the Society’s early astrophotographers.

The Pettinger-Guiley Observatory

During the 1970s, the organization adopted its current name, the Tacoma Astronomical Society. In the late 1970s, Al George, a local businessman and enthusiastic amateur astronomer, purchased an observatory and relocated it to his home in Puyallup, Washington. The facility was named the Pettinger-Guiley Observatory (PGO) in recognition of the contributions and dedication of Norm Pettinger and Don Guiley.

The observatory remained an important part of TAS for 25 years before closing in 2002, following Al George’s retirement.

Continuing the Legacy

Throughout its history, the Tacoma Astronomical Society has remained dedicated to supporting amateur astronomers, promoting science education, and sharing the wonders of the universe with the community. Through its public events, educational programs, and outreach initiatives, TAS continues to inspire curiosity and foster a lasting appreciation for astronomy.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row gap=”0px” content_placement=”middle” css_animation=”none” css=”.vc_custom_1791379777439{margin-bottom: 60px !important;}” el_id=”about-rowx” woodmart_css_id=”6ac6498a63854″ responsive_spacing=”eyJwYXJhbV90eXBlIjoid29vZG1hcnRfcmVzcG9uc2l2ZV9zcGFjaW5nIiwic2VsZWN0b3JfaWQiOiI2YWM2NDk4YTYzODU0Iiwic2hvcnRjb2RlIjoidmNfcm93IiwiZGF0YSI6eyJ0YWJsZXQiOnt9LCJtb2JpbGUiOnt9fX0=” mobile_bg_img_hidden=”no” tablet_bg_img_hidden=”no” woodmart_parallax=”0″ woodmart_gradient_switch=”no” woodmart_box_shadow=”no” wd_z_index=”no” woodmart_disable_overflow=”0″ row_reverse_mobile=”0″ row_reverse_tablet=”0″][vc_column width=”1/2″][/vc_column][vc_column

["post-17","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
