The Black Endowment is

a cooperative approach to economic emancipation

It is a movement.

It is a practical strategy to build generational wealth and preserve generational legacies.

It is another way to vote.

It is NOT reparations.

The Economic Emancipation Monetary Fund (EEMF), also known as The Black Endowment, is a bold, collective approach to building lasting economic freedom and cultural preservation for Black and African American families across the United States. We are a 501c3 nonprofit whose mission is to empower our families to build generational wealth. Recognizing that wealth is not only economic but also cultural, we also invest in helping you research, preserve, and share family history and legacies, so that you can pass down your stories along with your assets.

With your contribution to our infrastructure building fund, you can be part of our nationwide movement to create sustainable wealth, expand financial literacy, and preserve cultural legacies for generations to come.

How do we do that?

With more than 10 million self-identified Black households in the U.S., our shared commitment—just $1 per month per household—has the power to grow a transformative endowment capable of generating long-term resources year after year. You can become a founding member of the Endowment and help bring to life a permanent economic institution, designed to grow stronger and more far-reaching over time.

Our nonprofit endowment was founded in Dayton, Ohio, as the result of a dream I’ve carried for decades–making wealth gains accessible despite all the forces aligned to keep us struggling and losing ground. The fund will be professionally managed by The Dayton Foundation, a trusted steward of endowment funds for over 100 years. Your Charter membership is tax deductible, protected and will be used to build the EEMF’s infrastructure for its projected launch in 2027.

— Joyce Barnes, Founder

Why an Endowment?

The EEMF is a grassroots concept that actualizes the Kwanzaa principle of Ujamaa—cooperative economics—and the Christian doctrine of koinonia—a shared life of mutual care—by creating an endowment fund to help families manage money and build generational wealth.

An endowment provides a permanent, invested source of income for nonprofits, allowing them to fund operations or special programs in perpetuity without relying solely on annual fundraising. By keeping the principal intact and spending only investment earnings, it ensures long-term financial stability, creates a lasting legacy for donors, and offers a cushion against economic downturns.

Economic & Cultural Wealth

The investment earnings from our endowment fuels the benefits you receive as a Charter (and eventually a Household) Member. A Household Membership provides access to Our OnePlace Directory where your family can search vetted, culturally sensitive lifelong financial education programs, the foundation for financial freedom and wealth building. We will also partner to provide genealogical training and tools to help you research, document, celebrate, and preserve your family's history and legacies, to pass down your stories along with your assets. As the fund grows, we will expand our offerings, including the creation of our online Legacy Museum—a space to preserve and share family histories for ourselves and for all of our generations to come.

All for only $1 a month.
